Hail damage is a very large issue in the United States. NOAA reports that severe thunderstorms caused $21 billion of damage in the spring of 2011, which hail being a major source of the damage. Hail doesn't normally cause immediate failure of building materials, but it weakens the building materials, such as roofing, so that premature failure will occur.
